YouTube: Futurama's Take on the Red Queen Hypothesis #
Ah, Futurama.
The Hotelicopter #
The title tells you all you need to know.
Craigslist Stories #
So I was talking about Craigslist? There was one I still remembered from reading a couple of years ago and, well, Google is amazing. Warnings: Misogynistic, pornographic (written), perverse, and actually not as good as I remembered. I dunno, is that the secret formula for a good story?

Microsoft's Latest Ad Campaign #
Quote: "I'm just not cool enough to be a Mac person." I dunno, maybe it will resonate with The People? I just can't believe you'd put that message into your ad.
Rands: The Makers of Things #
Bridge stories are always fascinating.
Google Design Apparently OK #
So Doug Bowman left in despair, but Kevin Fox (who himself left Google a while ago) tells us to keep in mind that it is only one dude's perspective. That's true, and his response is worth reading. But... I wasn't judging Google design on that. I was judging Google design on the clunky UIs they create.
Best of Craigslist: Thoughts From a Homeless Guy Now That I'm Back on My Feet #
There is something about Craigslist - maybe it's the simple aesthetic, perhaps it's the lack of money-chasing - that brings out some real down-to-earth stuff in the postings, genuine "small" stories about people's own lives.

Mari Kasurinen Sculptures #
My Little Pony... mash-ups? There's some great stuff here - Kill Bill, Han Solo, Chewbacca (comedic value), Edward Scissorhands, and Pan.
Speedtest.net #
I get about 6 Mbit down and 0.7 up - that's for the Auckland server, but internationally the results mostly keep up. This is on Vodafone/ihug unbundled ADSL2+ (I think).
YouTube: Obama Dishes It Out #
Zing!

26 March 2009

HD Trailer: Where the Wild Things Are #
All the cool kids are talking about it.
Engrish: Defend to Fuck to Burn #
Usually you can see what they're getting at, but this time, I'm not quite sure.
YouTube: Breakfast - Paul Henry on the Moustaches of Women #
Must... stop... mouth... flapping... Can't.

25 March 2009

Fuck You, Ticketek #
I think that's what they're saying, anyway. I definitely want to say it. Fuck you, Ticketek.
Love You, Zooey #
I'd want her back, too. She's probably not good for you though, bro. Girls like that?
S92A Scrapped #
[CROWD CHEERS]

23 March 2009

Best of Craigslist: Free 1998 BMW M3 #
And don't miss Girl Who Dumped Me Over the Phone at 1:30am.
Segway's New RMP #
The RMP is, I kid you not, a moonwalking robot. Check that shit out.
Video: Joel Spolsky at RailsConf 2008 #
Apparently the same speech he gave at Webstock '06, but he's clearly updated it. Joel can be pretty hit-and-miss, but his style is something special.

22 March 2009

Douglas Bowman Leaves Google #
Google turned out to be very resistant to beautiful (not just in looks, but flow, experience...). We all saw the recent Gmail themes, right? They make me want to murder kittens. It's one thing to not master the overall experience like Apple does... that's very, very hard. But producing shit? Something is wrong.

Mac mini Graciously Allowed to Live #
At a time when its demise seemed more likely than even Steve Jobs', the Mac mini has been updated. Still - after a 19 month wait - new Nvidia graphics and a couple speed bumps inside the same form factor since its 2005 debut isn't much to get excited about. No price drop either, and at current exchange rates, it ain't that attractive for Kiwis.

20 March 2009

Stuff: Five-Star Hotel Boss Slams One-Star Parked Cars #
Including this great line: "A lot of times the total value of all the cars in front of our door is not more than $1500."
Stuff: Teen Fined After Pants Fall Down #
Classic.

18 March 2009

Kiss Firefox EULA Goodbye #
"Mozilla agreed to remove the EULA prompt, and Ubuntu 8.10 shipped without it. Now Firefox users get an information bar on first launch." Hoo-ray! Come to think of it, most Mac apps don't make you dick around with an installer anyway, but regardless, this is a trend I would like to see more of.
One Hundred Treadmills #
Was it Einstein who posited that the universe has a tendency to fold back in on itself?

17 March 2009

Ze Frank: Worst Death Scene Ever #
And it's good (bad), but then someone linked to the worst line ever, and... oh baby.
IE6 End-of-Life Set #
Dec 31st, 2009.
Saturday Night Emergency #
I need Darude - Sandstorm, stat!

16 March 2009

YouTube: Brickies Labourer in Bangladesh #
So... I'm not a doctor, right? But I'm pretty sure there's some kind of OSH violation going on here.

15 March 2009

The Sizzling Sound of Music #
"In other words, students prefer the quality of that kind of sound over the sound of music of much higher quality. He said that they seemed to prefer 'sizzle sounds' that MP3s bring to music. It is a sound they are familiar with." And some good analysis to boot. In short: We like it because it's Home.
Video: The Crisis of Credit Visualized #
Good job - I learnt a thing or two, and the "panic" and "dark" scenes were well-directed.
The Chimps are Weaponizing #
Well. I don't think I need to add anything to a title like that.
On Advertising #
A good piece; the web's reliance on advertising-as-business-model is a serious problem.

11 March 2009

Twitter = Google's Next YouTube #
Interesting thoughts on why Google bought YouTube, and now needs to buy Twitter.

10 March 2009

Memorandum To: Citizens of NZ #
Telling it like it is. Yay! I think this kind of stuff represents some of the internet's finest moments.
iPhone Game: Zen Bound #
Ooo.

09 March 2009

Safari 4 Beta #
I'm not a Safari user, but that Top Sites view is stunning. The tabs-up-top is also interesting, though seems rather awkward.
The Onion: Sasha Obama Keeps Seeing Creepy Bush Twins While Riding Tricycle Through White House #
"While some White House staffers believe the visions to be nothing more than a child's plea for attention, others are less skeptical, claiming that the building's last resident committed horrible atrocities."
Aaron Swartz: RSS Hits the Big Time #
The new US stimulus bill requires government agencies to publish how they are spending the money in Atom or RSS. "Pretty amazing to see a government so tech-savvy." Isn't it just.

08 March 2009

Best Man Knocks Bride Into Pool #
Ah, he will get shit about this for the rest of his life. As noted by the caption, though, it is the American reactions that really make this video.

07 March 2009

Last.fm: The Fear #
"New Zealand’s second-most popular heavy folk poetry band.” I want a Moth Inversion T-shirt.

"I have an extensive DVD collection."

YouTube: Penn & Teller Explain Sleight of Hand #
Here's how Penn & Teller get it: Even when they tell you how it's done, it's still beautiful to watch.
YouTube: Good Afterbull Constanoon! #
Oh man, this guy. All the way down the hall!

02 March 2009

YouTube: WoW Girls #
"Two things if a guy finds out another WoW player is female: 1. He stalks her forever." Heh heh heh.
I LEGO N.Y. #
Image after image, it just kept making me smile.

Panic's New Offices #
This be the Founder's Room. The wall in front slides across to hide it away. A.w.e.s.o.m.e.
The Campaign To End IE6 #
It's finally dying.
Video: Porno Bitch Fight (NSFW) #
From a philosophical point of view, this is one of the most depressing things you will ever see. On the other hand, from a being-dragged-along-the-ground-by-their-hair point of view, this is totally awesome.
Botanicalls Twittering Plant #
Oh yes it does. This is something I heard about at Webstock - one particularly interesting variant was where you don't subscribe to it, but your friends do, meaning social pressure (often more powerful than the tweets of plants) ensures regular hydration. (See also The Git Bell.)
