Garmin Communicator Will Fuck You #
This is amazing - the installer for the browser plugin will, without any sort of warning, terminate all running instances of Safari and Firefox. Bang bang!

Some ideas are so great, the execution so bang-on, you just have to throw up your hands and say, "Beautiful."

Holy crap.
Happy Valentine's Day #
Sorry about the late. This is worth it though, huh?
Q&A on Mozilla and the European Commission #
"Mozilla’s involvement with the recent European Commission (EC) conclusion regarding Microsoft’s tying of Internet Explorer to the Windows operating system." What to do about it, that is the question. This could have a very interesting outcome.

Video: From the Floor at Webstock #
Because if I'm going to embarrass myself, why not in front of the whole internet? What are they gonna do, call me names? (Perhaps hard to tell, but we're dancing there. This is why.)

See you Sunday.

Looks like a fun place to live.

I always enjoy the crazy extremes of these stories: People will do anything to be happy.

NYT: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall #
Might not be worth reading the whole thing, but there's some interesting shots in here. Two takeaways for me: One, as noted in the piece, Bush seems more regretful about bad photos than bad realities. Two, the guy actually did embody good leadership qualities (only in the narrow sense of the word, sadly) which helps to understand why so many were endeared to him. Also, that last series of 3 photos... the guy looks ruined.
JavaScript CAPTCHA Solver #
Uses HTML 5 Canvas to pull out the pixel grid, then extracts each character and sends it into a neural net (very loosely, a learning pattern-matching machine - a pale imitation of the human brain) to determine the most likely match. All in JavaScript.
Video: Joaquin Phoenix's Bizarre Letterman Appearance #
That's either great character acting or a bad comedown. I was really impressed by the way Letterman handles it all. Ultimately it's good advertising for Two Lovers, which does sound pretty damn good.

Softwear by Microsoft #
I really like the many-flavours-of-candy Microsoft shirt. (Some people may suspect sarcasm. No, seriously! I wouldn't be seen dead in a Vista shirt, but I like that design a lot, and it harkens back to the days when I was hugely inspired by the Microsoft products I was using. DOS: It's been so long. You're still beautiful. Call me!)
The Vista Shutdown Crapfest #
I remember reading this when it first came out a couple of years ago, and it's such a goodie because it cuts right to the heart of what is so wrong in Microsoft. I would really enjoy being hired in as a (highly paid) management consultant to clear all that shit out. (Of course, the reality is that it would be pretty much the toughest job in the world.)
Designer Bullshit: Perimeter Oscillations and the Pepsi Ratio #
Yeah, so did you notice the new Pepsi logo is an observation of the Earth's magnetic field? What, you didn't see that? Shame au!

Dwelling in Possibilities #
An hour-long read (via Stewmail, April '08) that is astonishing in its insight. If there is any possible way to make your brain explode, this is it. If prose can change your life? This is it.

TED: James Howard Kunstler Dissects Suburbia #
This one is courtesy Mr Underwood (and had been sitting in my inbox since May 2008). The reason I enjoy it, and I am probably being overly romantic here, but the reason I enjoy it is that it vividly exposes a root cause of modern society's bizarre disconnection with, well, anything real.

This kind of stuff is always fascinating. Check this out: "In the nineteenth century, doctors used vibrators to help relieve women of 'hysteria,' though almost no medical accounts from the time acknowledge that this therapy was basically masturbation."

As he was trying to rape it. What the Hell. I'm never sure if these publications just make it up, but I'm linking it anyway for this perfect quotation: "When I saw the raccoon I thought I’d have some fun."
