- YouTube: Zing! #
- Just rock on down to the video clip. I don't think you can even buy them in New Zealand.
- Video: The Unfinished Swan #
- You're about to have one of those how come no one thought of this before? moments.
- YouTube: Wasszzzaaaa! #
- 2008 version. This is a good ad. I was expecting beer.
- The Google and Things #
- Neil Gaiman's sad tale of his attempt to buy an Android G1 (iPhone Killah).
- DF: Steve Jobs Just Getting Started #
- "I think it's only in the last two or three years that Apple has gotten to the point where Jobs feels he has a decent set of crayons at his disposal. In Jobs's mind, the iPhone is only the beginning of what a truly flourishing Apple can produce." This is a good point, and a bloody exciting one. The iPhone is a massive success... what do you follow that up with?
- Wired: The Fall of Blogging #
- I was a blogger (2003-2005, chiefly). I was partly undone by a demanding full-time job... really only now, three years later, have I managed to finesse sufficient life and sleep into a workaday schedule. But also, there is the fact that writing is an awful, gruelling process of brick walls and self-loathing, its only reward the haphazard satisfaction in the result. I won't lie to you: that's the kind of thing that I call a good time. But, still. You've got to be up for it.
- SNL: Bush Endorses McCain & Palin #
- Another classic. Also, Obama sings when he's winning.
- NZ Herald: 2008 Election Rolling Poll #
- The Internet was less forthcoming than I hoped, but here's a decent one. It suggests National (dipping under 50%) probably can't govern alone - but perhaps could with ACT (2%) and United Future (0.5%). Labour is still looking very sub-40%, Greens about 7%, and 1 seat from Jim Anderton's Jim Anderton Party, which I saw polling at 0.0% (snigger!). I actually quite like Kiwibank. NZ First? Polling round 3%, and more than a dozen articles have described Winston as being behind, even well behind, in Tauranga (not one of them wishing to present their evidence). Maori Party is expected to get about 6 seats, making them potential kingmakers if the right-wing alliance falls short. However, this would put them in the unenviable position of either propping up an unpopular government, or supporting a party that seeks their seat's abolishment. The tyranny of choice.
- The Atlantic: Goodbye to All That: Why Obama Matters #
- Keen for a long read? This is a good'n.
- Pentagram Redesigns The Atlantic #
- Lots of graphic design porn here.
- YouTube: McCain Agrees That You Suck #

- Twist: Twitter Trends #
- A big win for science.
- Twitter: Wasilla's all I saw #
- A Palin-drome.
- Video: Microsoft PDC Promo Sung by Boy Band #
- You think I'm joking, don't you? Well, shit just got real.
- YouTube: Marilyn Manson on Sarah Palin #
- What an awesome answer.
- YouTube: Colin Powell for President #
- This is actually a video of him endorsing Barack Obama, but by the end, I had eyes only for him.
- YouTube: Cows With Guns #
- "He was a scrawny calf, who looked rather woozy / No one suspected he was packing an Uzi." No doubt you've seen this before, but it's one of my favourites.
- DF: Listen to Tim Cook #
- "One thing Apple knows is what it does. Apple designs and produces very nice things. All this hubbub over low-cost laptops is outside the realm of what makes Apple Apple." It's a good point because I often forget it myself - what if Apple made a really cheap laptop and/or dropped all their prices! Well, Apple are hugely successful because they don't do that. It can't be cheap and great.
- SNL: Do You Think You Can Step in Amy? #
- OOH!
- YouTube: Bert & Ernie Gangsta-Rap #
- OOH!
- DF: Google's Open Source Patches to Wine #
- "Consider: In the same way that Apple took Mac OS X and Cocoa and shrunk them to serve as a handheld device OS, I think Google could take Android and grow it to serve as a PC OS." You do kind of wonder when everyone will give up on user-friendly Linux. (I'm pretty close.)
- YouTube: Cat Runs Into Wall #
- As advertised.
- Join Me on a Quick Tour of Crazytown #
- I'm never quite sure how to take Ballmer. He doesn't seriously believe Macs don't have USB, does he?
- hicksdesign #
- Sometimes, I describe myself as a Web Designer. You know what I should do? I should shut the fuck up.
- Jobs: BluRay Is a Bag of Hurt #
- Apple goes stab! stab! at Sony.
- YTMND: You Make Me Touch Your Hands for Stupid Reasons #
- "I'd rather date a spider." Hot damn, the Internet is awesome this week.
- New Yorker: The Choice #
- A comprehensive endorsement of Barack Obama. I'm a big fan of The New Yorker - I believe I linked to their similar pro-Kerry (read: anti-Bush) piece from Nocents four years ago. I hate to dip into mawkishness, but in a world I often feel like giving up on, reading pieces like this gives me a sense of calm.
- Blender Defender #
- Oh man. Who would have thought the crown for best site on the internet would be lifted so swiftly?

- MacBook New #
- Delicious.
- YouTube: John Cleese on Sarah Palin #
- "...like a nice-looking parrot."
- Honey, Can You Take Out the Garbage? #
- Holy fucking shit. Update: Regular reader Stew writes in to say, "Look at the bottom most section. Look closer. I see a McDonald's hamburger!" When will Hollywood wake up and see the harm product placement is doing to our planet?
- 270 to Win #
- Obama! Obama!
- Helvetica Revival Monopoly #
- Purrty.
- Vimeo: The Remnants (Preview) #
- Mm, Ze Frank in a TV series...

- $300 million of advertising... what exactly? (Computer operating systems and office documents - woo!) See also Gruber's take, or the executive summary.
- SNL: VP Debate Palin / Biden #

- Herald: Truck Hits Onewa Overbridge #
- Photos. "Earlier police told trapped drivers to turn off their engines after a truck carrying a digger on its tray crashed into the old Onewa motorway ramp, raining concrete on cars and blocking traffic." Good thing it was about to be demolished anyway, huh? It wasn't quite as impressive as this one.
- Herald: "Fucking Eric Schmidt is a fucking pussy" #
- Ballmer: the one and only.
- YouTube: Andy Kaufman - I Trusted You #
- Memorable. See also Man on the Moon.
- Dual Immobilisers #
- The most stolen car in the country aye? Well, I suppose that's as bad as it gets. What's that? It's the most stolen and the fourth most stolen car in the country? Well, that's both worse, and stupid. Also, a brief aside: who would steal a Mazda Lantis? Update: as pointed out by others, my previous car was the eighth most stolen. Am I the only one who pays money for these things?
- Macworld: Obama Camp Offers iPhone App #
- I can see how this would be quite a useful app for those proselytising on the run. (Screen.)
- Daily WTF: Joe liked to go for runs around the neighbourhood #
- Everybody likes a good run.
