The Wetware Crisis: the Dead Sea effect #
Fantastic analogy. See also The Daily WTF's response and Bruce's followup.
Twistori #
Feels a lot like being God.

DF: Big Fan #
That Cabel, he is a dude.

28 April 2008

YouTube: Japanese Dunk #
How the Hell does he get that angle?
Unintended Awesomeness #
Firefox 3: now with psychic command line.

27 April 2008

TypeRacer #
Averaged 47 WPM after 15 races. I'm actually much faster but typos abound. Also, if there's a letter like 'X', I have to look down at the keyboard to find it.
Flickr Photo Download: Pixel Spout #
V. cool.

Paul Graham: Be Good #
"So 'Don't be evil' may be the most valuable thing Paul Buchheit made for Google, because it may turn out to be an elixir of corporate youth. I'm sure they find it constraining, but think how valuable it will be if it saves them from lapsing into the fatal laziness that afflicted Microsoft and IBM."

PAN: Don’t Hate the Playa #
Stupid people trying to sound officious is hilarious to no extent. Also, I recommend reading the comment thread right through here, it reeks of substance the whole way down...
Video: Test firing of new NASA methane rocket engine #
That is one awesome repeat-x effect.

21 April 2008

Filthy: Forgetting Sarah Marshall #
Another good'n from the Apatow stable. Stars Kirsten Bell, which is as good a reason to see a movie as I've ever heard. Also stars the one and only Jason Segel - if you're a fan of his, you've got to see his recurring character in Undeclared.
I've Taught It Obstacle Avoidance and Blogging #
Webcomic line of the year.
Angry BBQ #
You thought it was over / You thought it was safe to use the internet again / But / This holiday season / LOLCAT has a new name.

YouTube: Internal Microsoft Vista SP1 Music Video #
Yes - a Vista SP1 Music Video. Yes - it is as bad as you are imagining. Why... do they do this?
Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin #
Worked like a charm (although the UI was a little rough). I've jumped back on the upgrade wagon recently as my site got hacked. This plugin makes the entire world a better place. On the day I installed it, seven days of rain gave way to clear blue skies.
YouTube: Discovery Channel - I Love the World #
Highly likely to put a smile on your face.

19 April 2008

Cabel: Giant Burgers & Ninja Warrior #
How many buns did that burger have?
Download YouTube Videos as MP4 Files #
"An interesting side-effect of YouTube's recent push for higher quality videos is that most videos can be downloaded as MP4 files directly from YouTube." There's a bookmarklet, and even a Greasemonkey script.

Graffiti Artist Sticks It To The Man #
That's right, kids: graffiti can be used for good.
CARS Presents: This Week, In Daring Fireball #
I miss this site. I hope the author is doing something cool in the meantime; too much raw talent too waste.

BZZZZZT! Fuck me.
Best. Chart. Ever. #
Be sure to read the article.

15 April 2008

YouTube: Winston on Yummy #
A most enterprising feline. (He does protein shakes too.)
BusinessWeek: Dell Should Learn From the Model T #
Excellent piece from '05 discussing how Ford lost dominance of the auto market, and neatly predicting the same fate for Dell.

14 April 2008

Zeldman: Self-publishing is the new blogging #
Don't really know what he's talking about it, but I like the way this guy writes about the web.
Flickr Video: Narcoleptic Cat #
Donk!

10 April 2008

Norway mandates open formats #
Yay! Implementation sounds quite sensible too. (I say that begrudgingly, as my hatred of PDF is extensive and visceral.)
The Michael Jackson Effect #
Finally, a "healthy" cereal with effects you can see!

09 April 2008

Cabel: Japan Goes Search #
Ads in Japan don't have URLs no mo' - instead they have example Google searches. This is a great little piece of evidence showing how search has become the way to access the web for many consumers.
Daily WTF: The Service Awards Ceremony #
Ah, the joy of seeing a fraud shown up!

08 April 2008

Europa Universalis: Rome: I'm sorry, Marcus #
"So it'll be a simple matter for us to load up a few cohorts, sail across the sea, lay siege to Scorda, and then annex it. We can exchange the horses for the spare wine from Rome, which will help check unrest."

07 April 2008

YouTube: Bangkok Train #
Man, that is insane. Good use of space, though.
DF: Firefox 3 vs. Safari 3 #
A number of interesting thoughts (although I think his first complaint is due to be fixed before final). I thoroughly agree with his summary: extensions are great, Firefox is great, Safari is great, Mac web browsing is great... the current situation is in marked contrast to the dark days of >95% IE in 2003.

PA: Anime Convention #
"This anguished man dressed as a female hedgehog communicates a great deal about what it is to be human."
UK Unveils Stunning New Coins #
Beautiful. Compare to the latest of the US. Hopefully the whole set doesn't end up as pocket garbage due to the ridiculous inclusion of 1p and 2p coins.

02 April 2008

NYT: The Hopeful Monster #
Fascinating stuff about sudden jumps in evolution. Also: "The difference seems to be due to a mutation in a gene known as Ultrabithorax." I'm sure my colleague, Dr. Lo4d3d, would concur: Best Gene Name Ever!
ThinkGeek: Betamax to HD-DVD Converter #
Be sure to watch the video of it in action.

Paul Graham: You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss #
Some really great anthropological observations in here.
JWZ: Happy Run Some Old Web Browsers Day! #
"In honor of the ten year anniversary of the Mozilla project, home.mcom.com, the Internet Web Site of the Mosaic Communications Corporation, is now back online." A few interesting comments there about what it was like back in the day...
