- Bill Gates on Vista and Apple's 'Lying' Ads #
- "If you just want to say, 'Steve Jobs invented the world, and then the rest of us came along,' that's fine." It's an odd situation - Bill Gates is incredibly successful, almost without precedent. And yet interviews consist of him constantly defending perceived failure.
- DI: Escape From Alcatraz #
- I'm always fascinated by those stories of people spending years covertly digging their way out of their prison cell with a discarded paper clip. There is some serious commitment involved. Then again, I suppose you have to fill in the time somehow.
- Fx Extension: Tab Effect #
- Every now and again, I will install an extension and say, "wow, I didn't know you could do that with an extension." (Then I promptly uninstalled it. But it was worth it.)
- Wikipedia: Cuban Missile Crisis #
- "We're eyeball to eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked." One hour ago, all I knew about this was the name. Now, I know how scary the Cold War was.
- NY Mag: The Power (and Peril) of Praising Your Kids #
- "Those who had been praised for their effort significantly improved on their first score - by about 30 percent. Those who’d been told they were smart did worse than they had at the very beginning - by about 20 percent." It goes for five pages, but it's well worth reading (if you find psychology as interesting as I do, anyway). Moves on to an interesting discussion of self-esteem. I also enjoyed the bit where someone declared, "I don't care what the experts say." I mean, shit, what would they know?
- Google is the new http:// #
- "One of the top search results in Google (number 6 at the time of this writing), is 'Google'. Hundreds of millions of users are trying to get to Google through Google."
- Turns Out, Digg is Full of Idiots #
- It's always satisfying to see some proof.
- Motion Blur Billboard #
- Wow. Expect to see this on trendy websites soon.
- Daily WTF: Enter the Matrix #
- Be careful: such a powerful interface may blow your mind.
- YouTube: Pickle Phobia #
- Man, was that funny.
- John Gruber, Cabel Sasser Live at Macworld Expo #
- Mr Daring Fireball & his brilliant guest give a panel just after the iPhone announcement. If only all podcasts were this good.
- CARS: Apple and Cisco in Talks on iPhone Trademark #
- Probably the best over-the-top megalomania between personified corporations you will read today.
- all i want for xmas is a psp #
- So maybe you've heard of this fake blog before. But I actually read it, and watched the music, and two thoughts came to mind. One, they didn't do a very good job of making it look grass-roots. Those are some very nice graphics, also your friends are, like, hot. And two... it's just so soulless and cynical. Damn, we live in an ugly world sometimes.
- Microsoft used to be smarter #
- "Used to be when Microsoft wanted to take a market from a successful competitor, they started by seducing their users with something comfortable, a product that worked just like the competitor's, and was better in some major way." Interesting thoughts. I guess people like myself, whose pre-2000 computer knowledge did not extend far beyond
AUTOEXEC.BAT, don't really understand how Microsoft was ever successful. - The Perry Bible Fellowship: Executive Decision #
- I was put on to this site by The Great Azrael, and such an incredible discovery just goes to show why we call him that. This comic is, quite literally, violently awesome.
- CARS: Zune Phone To Also Suck #
- "For example, all calls will be wrapped in Microsoft’s DRM and the end-user license agreement will state that the contents of each call will be the property of Microsoft in perpetuity. Also, the Zellular Phone Call will only allow you to call someone three times."
- One: A Space Odyssey #
- 2001: A Space Odyssey condensed into one minute, using Lego. Freaking hilarious. (Link lifted directly from DF.) (Having said that, minor editing was performed to excise the hideous plural.)
- YOUTUBERS #
- Someone has assembled clips from many of the pioneer YouTube bloggers. Fascinating.
- Why you should be using disambiguated URLs #
- Lots of reasons, if you care about things like your site traffic. (Me, I care about people. Traffic too, though.) I'm using the WordPress plugin, although I have to admit I managed to dig myself into something of a hole back in the heady days of 2005.
- Good People, by David Foster Wallace #
- Because far too much of what I read on the net is pretty much garbage. Incidentally, I didn't mention; Click Here was originally inspired by Caoine.
- YouTube: Rocket Explodes; Fuel Rains Down #
- Title says it all. It looks like the apocalypse. "Hey, Jed, d'ya reckon this 17-foot crack in the fuel tank is a worry?" "Nah bro, she'll be right!"
- DI: Give Way at All Times #
- Or you might just be responsible for the largest man-made explosion in history (and have to wait for nuclear weapons to relieve you of the title).
- And the joke comes full circle! #
- I love it when people unknowingly quote satire. Especially when the satirical blog in question has "MacStrawman" in the title.
- Steve Jobs: Thoughts on Music #
- "Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats ... Apple would embrace [this] in a heartbeat." See also comments by Dan Moren, and Crazy Apple Rumors for some balance.
- Programmers Don't Like to Code #
- I never realised it, but he's right. Also worth checking out is his hilarious closing link.
- Why Windows is less secure than Linux #
- Two very interesting illustrations to argue the classic line. I don't know how scientific this is, but I wouldn't call it surprising. Linux certainly comes across as looking very well-architected and modular, while the Windows diagram looks about as screwed up as the structure of the
Documents and Settingsfolder. - Netscape 9 Announced #
- Based on Firefox, ties in with their new Digg rip off Netscape.com portal. Netscape 8 was a pile of shit, why are they persevering? I just can't seem to get any blood out of this stone!
- DI: Clever Hans the Math Horse #
- The story of the horse that nearly outsmarted all of humanity. A great twist in the middle, can you pick it? I got sucked in real good.
- MySpace Gets Goatse'd #
- A hideous attack on those who deserve it most, and a very interesting post to accompany it. See also the follow-up.
