Skullduggery
A few links to share with you today. We begin with a classic example of it was worth losing my shitty job for. Also, the browser wars are back, haven’t you heard, and I tell you what you will never find a more mature, rational bunch than browser fans. Take, for example, these “fair and balanced” CNET User Reviews of Firefox. Some group, obviously offended by the thousands of Mozilla fanboys posting favourable reviews, have come in to redress the balance – all of the last 10 were 1/5 ratings when I viewed the page, including helpful advice like “NOT recommended when auctioning online because when placing a bid takes too long to load and before you know it auction is already over” and “it doesn’t support MSN Space’s show slide like playing picture.” Well, that does it for me.
Another classic example are the recent PC World 100 Best Products of 2005. Firefox was named product of the year; Opera was #88. Opera declared themselves winner of “best browser”, although no one was really sure how they figured this one out. Asa, a Mozilla Foundation employee, had no qualms calling them out for it. What I found quite amazing was how many Opera fans resolutely defended Opera’s claim, despite what was surely devastating evidence to the contrary.
This is not to say Firefox fans are any better – I doubt they are – but just, man. Why are they even yelling at each other anyway? Aren’t they trying to take market share away from IE, rather than each other? I would hope so. It seems the new browser wars will be fought in forums and blog comments. Bring out your stupidest and most arrogant! They will be our armies. Geez. I’m already wondering if its worth it.
And finally, you may be familiar with Kottke (pronounced cot-key), who gets a brief mention on my about page. Not so long ago he moved his blog to a full-time pursuit supported by reader donations. Nice for him, although a few people are starting to ask what’s with all the international holidays?
